The social model: a victim of criticism

Blaming critics of the Social Model of Disability for the current state of Disability Rights and access to medical care, especially Disabled ones, is pretty disgusting and disingenuous

As a disabled woman I reject the model partly for its epistemic relativism, but also to its obliviousness of how capitalism and imperialism literally disables people if not outright kills them. Disability is not a metaphor, and it is time for more of us who have a problem with the Social Model to speak out against this gaslighitng.

The social model of disability has been criticised for failing to take account of individual impairments. Those critics are partly to blame for eroding its strength and reducing disabled people to the status of tragic victims says Mike Oliver, who developed the concept.
